S1:E8 Overcoming Interview Nervousness
Dealing with interview nervousness as a recent graduate is a common challenge, but with the right strategies, you can significantly reduce anxiety and enhance your performance. The key lies in preparation, mindset, and practical techniques to manage nervousness.
Preparation is fundamental to building confidence. Start by thoroughly researching the company and the role you are applying for. Understand the company’s mission, values, culture, recent achievements, and challenges. Familiarize yourself with the job description and reflect on how your skills and experiences align with the role. This knowledge equips you to answer questions more effectively and helps you feel more in control during the interview.
Another crucial aspect of preparation is practising common interview questions. Look for lists of frequently asked interview questions and prepare thoughtful, authentic responses. Practice saying these responses out loud, either by yourself or with a friend or family member acting as the interviewer. This rehearsal helps you articulate your thoughts more clearly and reduces the likelihood of being caught off guard during the interview.
Another effective technique is conducting mock interviews. These can be with a career coach, a mentor, or a friend. A mock interview provides a safe environment to practice and receive feedback on your responses, body language, and overall demeanour. It also helps you get used to the dynamics of an interview, making the actual situation feel more familiar and less intimidating.
