S2:E6 Strategic Thinking for Promotion
Many professionals face challenges getting a promotion due to limited exposure to strategic decision-making. To address this, it’s important to actively seek opportunities to gain insights into strategic processes and demonstrate your potential to contribute at a higher level.
The journey starts with understanding your organization’s strategic goals. This understanding is foundational to appreciating the context and rationale behind crucial decisions. Begin by familiarizing yourself with the company’s mission, vision, and staff plans, often available in annual reports, strategic plans, or internal communications. This knowledge provides a backdrop for understanding strategic decisions and helps you align your work with these broader objectives.
Engaging with cross-functional teams is another way to gain exposure to strategic decision-making. Projects that involve multiple departments often require strategic thinking to balance different objectives and constraints. Volunteer for such initiatives or request to be part of cross-functional meetings, even as an observer. This exposure can be invaluable in understanding strategic decisions and the various factors that influence them.
Seek to develop a relationship with someone in a strategic role, such as a mentor or a senior colleague. This relationship can provide you with insights into the strategic planning process and decision-making at higher levels. When engaging with mentors or old colleagues, express your interest in learning about strategic aspects and ask thoughtful questions to deepen your understanding.
